Backstory
Yumio lived in a small village in Inazuma. She was very well known among the villagers as a bright, cheerful, and curious teenage girl. At one point, an unknown disease broke out in the village, and no one knew a cure for it. She decided to help the villagers and set out on a long journey to find a remedy. Her parents gave her a family heirloom dagger – a kaiken – to aid her on her travels, inspire her ambition, and remind her of her family. She traveled for a very long time until one day she noticed a red light coming from a cave. Being a curious person, she entered the cave and saw dark red crystals. Fascinated by them, she touched them with the intention of taking them, hoping they would help the people of her village. When her fingers made contact with the crystals, they exploded, throwing her backward. At first, she felt pain from the impact and thought she would be fine. However, in the following days, she began to experience immense pain, and the crystals she had seen in the cave started growing all over her face. She struggled back to her home village, begging for help, but the villagers saw her as a monster, another threat to the community. During this time, she never managed to see her parents or her older brother. Heartbroken, she left the village, unwilling to become a terror to the people who had loved her only a short time before. Exhausted, burning with fever, and covered in crystals growing across her face and body, she collapsed against the trunk of a tree. Her gaze was fixed on the sky as the rays of the sun brushed against her weary face."Help.. please.. anyone..." she whispered before losing consciousness, but before closing her eyes, she saw the silhouette of an unfamiliar figure. She thought it was the end for her, that she would never again see her parents, her older brother, or the people of her beloved village. She woke up in an unfamiliar place, remembering nothing. The figure she had seen before losing consciousness was a man who had saved her life and also stopped the unknown power from developing further. Most of the crystals disappeared from her face, leaving traces of her power only in the crystals on her cheeks and in her pupils. Upon learning that he had saved her, she decided to trust him. In exchange for helping her and offering to teach her how to use her power, the man wanted to use her abilities to develop Delusions. She did not fully understand it, but if he believed it served a good purpose, she agreed to the arrangement. In this way, the man became her guide and mentor. However, Yumio was never entirely convinced of the positive nature of Delusions. Thanks to her mentor, she developed her power and learned to control it. According to him, the Anemo element was the key to fully unlocking her abilities. He believed it could elevate her power so greatly that she might become stronger than the gods themselves, even the Archons. When he decided her power had advanced enough to wield the Anemo element, he gave her a Delusion. Because of her distrust of Delusions, Yumio tried not to use it.One day, during her mentor's absence, she decided to explore the place that had become her home. Secretly, she entered his office, a place she was forbidden to enter when he was not there. Curious, she reached for a book on his desk, one he had always kept away from her. When she opened it, she was horrified by its contents. It contained notes about her, her power, and his plans for her – once the Delusion ended her life, her power would be taken for his own use. These revelations filled her with shock, despair, and a profound sense of betrayal toward the person who had been closest to her until then – her mentor.Overwhelmed by despair and desperation, she fled from her "home". A fierce hatred for her mentor ignited within her heart, and she destroyed and abandoned the Delusion he had given her. When her mentor learned of her escape, he sent people after her and soon followed himself. When Yumio was finally confronted by the pursuers and her mentor, who attempted to manipulate her into returning, her resentment toward him led her to kill him with her own hands. The dagger passed down through generations became the blade that ended one life and would soon end several more. These events changed Yumio beyond recognition. The bright, curious, and helpful girl who had been loved by everyone and whose goal had been to help those closest to her became a cold, reserved, and determined criminal with a single objective – to obtain an Anemo Vision at any cost, even if that cost was other people's lives. Her immense ambition spread even greater fear among the people of Inazuma. The Vision Hunt Decree was no longer their only concern. She became a terror to Inazuma, as well as an obstacle and target for Raiden Shogun. She tracked every person with an Anemo Vision she learned about, but her ultimate target became a certain ronin – Kaedehara Kazuha. Kazuha sensed her presence immediately but waited for her to make her move.At one point, Yumio launched herself at him from the roof of a building, but Kazuha's keen senses detected the incoming attack. He managed to defend himself. Kazuha decided to start a conversation in order to understand the intentions of the person who had been watching him and terrorizing the people of Inazuma for so long. Eventually, he learned of her ambitions, while Yumio planned to finish him with a single decisive strike. Her hand had already gathered a vast amount of power for the attack when a fiery light suddenly appeared within it.Surprised, she stopped and opened her hand, where she saw a Pyro Vision. She felt sorrow toward the gods and immense disappointment. It felt as though Teyvat itself had turned against her and changed her destiny. Instead of the Anemo Vision she had sought for so long, she had been granted the element of fiery passion and determination.Shocked by this phenomenon, her attitude immediately shifted to one of defensiveness and uncertainty toward everything she had been striving for. If Teyvat had different plans for her, should she cling so stubbornly to her own? Confused, she fled the scene of the battle, which left the already stunned Kazuha bewildered after witnessing someone receive a Vision while trying to steal his own.The wandering ronin followed Yumio, hoping to understand both her doubts and her as a person. Seeing Kazuha's genuine intentions, Yumio told him why she had done everything she had done. Kazuha responded with compassion and empathy, relating to her feelings of confusion and helplessness. He offered to help her make amends for everything she had done, and she agreed.First, he asked Yoimiya to teach Yumio how to use her Vision, believing that Yoimiya's bright personality could help her change. This was how Yumio began learning to use a bow. According to both Kazuha and Yoimiya, it was the weapon most similar to a dagger aside from a sword, and a sword was not a good option because Yumio was accustomed to throwing her dagger. It was also easier for Yoimiya to teach, since she used a bow herself. The second step toward Yumio's transformation and redemption was joining the Watatsumi Army. Gorou was initially uncertain about the idea, but Kokomi immediately took Yumio under her wing. She became her new mentor and, recognizing Yumio's strategic mind, decided to nurture her talents in that direction. Yumio was determined to prove that she had changed for the better. This also led to a change in her appearance – she cut her hair to leave her past behind, and her outfit became brighter as a symbol of change and a new beginning. The members of the Watatsumi Army began to notice the transformation in her and slowly started accepting her. Unfortunately, many people in Inazuma still saw her as an enemy who was only pretending to change in order to gain trust before striking unexpectedly.Despite her new ambitions – regaining trust and uncovering her past – she still sometimes thinks about taking Kazuha's Vision and running away.
